Music, Band & Orchestra
Music Program
Children explore the elements of music by developing various musical skills. These include singing, rhythmic competency, playing instruments, listening, creating, moving, and note reading. The student is encouraged to actively participate in the making of music. Through positive, enjoyable experiences in music the child will develop a deeper understanding of music’s expressive qualities.
Orchestra & Band Program
5th Grade Orchestra meets once a week at each elementary school. Students receive a group lesson and then have the opportunity to play as part of a full orchestra. This year we will work on reading music, knowing the parts of the instrument, how to hold and play the instrument, and how to play basic songs on the instrument. Students may choose from violin, viola, cello, or string bass in the orchestra, and these early classes will enable students to continue on and play more difficult music at their middle schools.
The 5th Grade Band gives students the opportunity to learn musical skills that will benefit them for a lifetime, including self-discipline, creativity, and teamwork. The band is open to all students who desire to play one of the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, tuba, or percussion. Students have a group lesson once a week to learn proper playing technique and other individual skills. Beginning in October band members come together once a week for full band rehearsals where students learn how to play together as an ensemble. A demonstration performance occurs in the winter, followed by a spring concert in May. Recruitment for incoming 5th graders will occur in late spring.

4th Grade Instrument Recruitment Night
Region 15 4th graders and their parents attend a Districtwide Instrument Recruitment Night in the spring to learn first-hand about the instrument options for the 5th Grade Band and Orchestra Program. Music teachers share information with students and parents about joining Band or Orchestra and members of the PHS Tri-M Music Honor Society showcase their instruments on stage and one-on-one with students.
